The comparison between vibecoding vs traditional coding gets framed wrong most of the time. It's not a competition and it's not vibecoding replacing developers. It's two different activities with different inputs, different outputs, and different people who should be doing them.

An app built with vibecoding that serves a few hundred users performs fine. An app built to serve hundreds of thousands of concurrent users needs architecture decisions, database sharding, caching layers, load balancing, that vibecoding tools don't make well. At scale, developer expertise matters.


Security-critical systems

If your app handles payment processing, protected health information, or sensitive financial data at volume, the security requirements go beyond what vibecoding tools are optimized for. Not because the AI can't write secure code, but because verifying that the code is actually secure requires a level of review that most non-technical builders can't perform.


Complex integrations

Connecting an app to an existing enterprise system requires understanding both systems at a technical level. Vibecoding handles simple API integrations well. Deep system integrations still benefit from a developer who can debug at the infrastructure level.


How to Decide Which Approach You Need

The decision comes down to three questions.


First: how many people will use this? If it's you and a small team, vibecoding is almost always the right choice. If it's hundreds of external customers, think carefully.


Second: does this tool handle sensitive data? If it touches payments, health information, or anything regulated, involve a developer in at minimum a security review even if you build it with vibecoding.


Third: what happens if it breaks? Internal tools that a few people use can tolerate downtime and bugs. Customer-facing tools that are core to your business cannot. The higher the stakes of failure, the more you want professional development practices behind the build.

Vibecoding first for anything internal, experimental, or serving a small known group. Traditional development when the tool becomes part of your core product, serves large external audiences, or handles sensitive regulated data. Many tools start as vibecoding projects and get rebuilt by a developer once they've proven their value and outgrown their original scope.

Can I learn to code from vibecoding?
